  • End of June update

June: only 5 rides as it turned out, due to holidays, very busy work days, and poor weather. But I have been riding Ikigai more frequently and very much enjoying it.

I only had one go up what I call Lower Fenceline all month, and it was tough going.

I did have a fun ride – I couldn’t figure out why the bike was so hard to control, and I even went into the bank at one point. It turned out I’d bumped the handlebars and misaligned them. Fortunately I over compensated toward the bank side rather than the cliff side of the trial.

    Handle bars
    Mud.

May: supposedly I rode 125km, and got in 17 rides, including 9 goes up Fenceline, but only 2 up to the summit.

Hopefully I’ll get to do more riding in July, and, if I can get up to the summit a few times I’m keen to have a crack at the Tip Track too.

  • 😢

A sad farewell to the Roscoe tonight. I am pleased it has gone to a nice young chap, I hope it serves him well.

  • Roscoe’s last ride

A sad day tinged with excitement and anticipation. I did the usual ride to the turbine. The Roscoe had been an incredible bike, and if I had the space and money I’d keep it. Alas, on to Trade Me it goes.

  • New bike day

Hopefully the first ride will be in a few days after the Ridewrap has cured and the tyres have been converted to tubeless.

    Boxy, but good.
  • Pay-off

The hill climbing seems to be paying off. The climb up Koru at Mākara at the weekend was much easier than I ever recall it being.

I have been using Strava on my Fenceline rides, and while I find the times dubious, they are trending down. I would like to complete the leg between the Fling and Sawmill in less than 7 minutes. If I can keep riding I might be able to do this within a month. However, this will depend on how I perform on the new bike, as I expect it to be more challenging on steep climbs.

  • Mākara & Miramar

Mākara on Saturday. It was wet and a little slippery so it was a quick trip to the top up the 4WD track and down Peak Flow et al. It was enjoyable.

Miramar on Sunday. I returned to where I rode my first single track, Juvie. It was a trip down memory lane as it must be over 2 years since I last rode there. I discovered a short and easily sessionable grade 3 called Bootleg, it had some nice corners, one quite tight and challenging, and some good roots and so on.

Despite the bike making a weird noise, possibly the bottom bracket, I decided to attempt Jailbrake. I got freaked on the second corner and bailed, but I do really want to ride it as it looks amazing.

I also finally got the chance to muck around on the pump track and attempting some baby jumps and so on.

Misty at the summit of Mākara Peak.
  • Day 2 of the Fling to the Turbine

It was a little quicker than yesterday, and I did feel I recovered faster. Perfect conditions and a great ride.

  • Knackered

Monday was a rest day, I was so tried.

Tuesday was a quick zip to Rollercoaster and up Fenceline. It was incredibly hot, but a satisfying ride.

  • Rest

Rest day today, I was feeling pretty knackered. I can’t wait to get out there again tomorrow.

  • Order day

In other news, I ordered a new bike today. I am very excited. It will be a month or two until it arrives. I feel I have a lot of practice to do in the meantime.
